All the political parties have started preparing themselves for the upcoming assembly elections in five states. One of the states amongst it is Punjab. It currently has Congress as the ruling government with Captain Amarinder Singh as the chief minister of the state. Before turning towards the internal politics in congress we first need to study the current situation of the state.
Punjab has had a grave problem of drugs for the past several years and it continues to exist. Secondly, it is an agrarian state. Punjab’s land is golden soil for farming and farmers. But the farmers of Punjab are fumed with the introduction of three farm laws by the center. Farmers majorly from Punjab and other states are protesting against these laws for the last nine months on the borders of Delhi. There is a deadlock between the central government and the protesting farmers.
This issue will play a major role in the upcoming assembly elections in the state. Aam Adami Party under Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership is also all set to fight elections in Punjab. In June he has announced that the party’s chief ministerial candidate will be from the Sikh community. Also to woo the voters AAP had announced free electricity power to all in the state.
Congress had also promised free electricity in the state in 2017 which the party has failed to fulfill. Congress leader from Punjab Navjot Singh Sidhu has become the biggest critic of the Congress state government lead by Captain Amrinder Singh. He has several times highlighted that the CM has failed to fulfill the poll promises.
Thus this has ignited a row of disputes within congress. There is a tussle on who will become the chief minister’s face of the party in the upcoming election. But this is not time for the internal dispute as it will be beneficial for the opposition. There is rising opposition to Amarinder Singh’s leadership. If reports are to be believed then he is likely to leave the party. However, there is no clarity on whether he will join any other party.
The party has announced the emergency meeting of all the MLAs and had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi asking for Amarinder Singh’s replacement. What decision is being taken today in the meet has to be seen. However, the advantage of political turmoil in congress is taken by opposition parties especially it will be of benefit for the AAP.
There is a very thin possibility that the Bharatiya Janta Party will be able to create much difference in the state as people have anguish because of the farm laws. But if congress’ situation doesn’t improve then a split of votes is likely to happen. And if Amarinder Singh joins BJP by any chance then it will be altogether a new ball game of politics in Punjab.
