After formation and collapse of the government with Ajit Pawar in November 2019 for a very short duration of 80 hours, former chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis officially accepted the role of the leader of opposition in Maharashtra when Shivsena head Uddhav Thackeray took oath at the Shivaji Park, Dadar as the Chief Minister of Maharshtra leading three party government.
Even though initially it was tough for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who had governed Maharashtra for the full five year term from 2014 to 2019 was reluctant to accept the fact that despite being the single largest party in the 2019 assembly polls with105 seats they couldn’t form the government in the state.
There started coming statements in the media from the BJP spokesperson and leaders that the three party Maha Vikas Aghadi government is soon going to collpase and new government will be formed in the state. But with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar the heart and brain behind the formation of MVA government it was not an easy task.
Sooner, BJP realized that they should wholeheartedly accept the role of opposition party in the state. And they started working accordingly under the leadership of astute leader Devendra Fadnavis. He is the leader who singlehandedly criticised the MVA government frequently on various issues. Taking from interaction with media through press conferences to condemning government’s various decisions in the assembly he managed to solely corner the government.
That displayed how brilliant he is as the leader of opposition. He leads from all the fronts and he alone takes on all leaders of three parties (Shivsena, NCP, Congress). It was because of his leadership that BJP managed to get the resignation of Shivsena MLA Sanjay Rathod in Pooja Chavan case. From day he picked up this issue took follows and made sure that pressure gets created on the MVA government and it happened that way as the Sanjay Rathod gave his resignation before the budget session in March 2021.
Another instance where we witnessed his exceptional skills is the way he handled Anatlia, Sachin Vaze and Anil Deshmukh case. Meticulously BJP under his leadership managed to succumb MVA government. He consistently questioned leaders from all the three parties taking from Uddhav Thackeray to Ajit Pawar. He even condemned Sharad Pawar’s suggestion of probing Anil Deshmukh’s case by former DG Julio Reberio. Eventually, Anil Deshmukh too stepped down from the post of Home Minister.
Devendra Fadnavis analyses every situation diligently and makes sure he has in-depth knowledge about the same. Another thing about him is his timing. His timing of criticising and coming up with allegations against MVA government is very appropriate.
Democracy prevails only when there is a tough opposition to keep check on the government’s governance. Well, the opposition party at central level and the dissent leaders need to be this active to make a firm opposition if they want to change the government in the upcoming elections. In a democracy opposition party leaders are equally very important as the ruling party.
