Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul in October 2018. Many have alleged that he was murdered by the order of Saudi crown prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS). Khashoggi was a strong critic of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and had written several articles on the same. As per reports, he was Istanbul’s Saudi consulate to collect documents for his wedding with fiancee Hatice Cengiz. The journalist’s body was dismembered while Ms. Cengiz was waiting outside.
Khashoggi’s Fiancee Cengiz Demands
It’s been three years since the incident now yet Khashoggi’s family and fiancee Cengiz awaits justice. According to Cengiz Saudi prince should be punished. She has and continues to constantly demand punitive actions against MBS. Recently, Ms. Chengiz made headlines as she wrote an open letter to Canadian singer Justin Bieber to cancel his show in Saudi Arabia.
Human Rights Watch’s Support To Chengiz
Justin is among the celebrities set to perform at Saudi Arabia’s first Formula One Grand Prix in Jeddah next month. The event is happening on December 5 and other artists who will be performing at the grand event are A$AP Rocky, David Guetta, and Jason Derulo. Along with Chengiz, Human Rights Watch had also urged all the performers to back off from the F1 concerts saying the motto of the event is to diverge Saudi’s human rights violations.
Chengiz’s Open Letter To Justin Bieber
Chengiz in her open letter to Justin wrote how his pull out of the event will give a powerful message to the world that no one can use his name or talent to make up a country’s reputation who assassinates its critics. This incident has highlighted how socio-political events in the world affect and impact the lives and actions of popular personalities. It creates social pressure on them which at times shouldn’t happen.
Celebrities’ Social Responsibility
Celebrities should have the right to decide what to do and what not to, whether to be a part of something or not! When celebrities participate in the social movement by with their personal will is altogether a different thing that has more impact. For instance, several popular personalities across the globe have extended their support to the Black Lives Matter movement which made it a global movement not just limited to the US. Thus whatever decision a celebrity takes he or she has to think what impact it will have on people who follow them and eventually on the society.
Saudi Arabia’s Say On The Event
Justin has not yet reacted or commented on this letter. These performers’ major fans are the youngsters of Saudi Arabia. According to the music and sports are mediums of being in social change and reforms in the country. F1 race which is around the corner is the first time Saudi Arabia will host the premier sporting event, however, the country has previously conducted the lesser-known Formula-E race as an attempt to change the country’s profile as a tourist destination.
This is not the first time that a pop artist has to face pressure to back out of a concert in the Kingdom. In 2019, rapper Nicki Minaj has canceled her scheduled concert to extend her solidarity for women’s and LGBTQ rights.
