Key Take-Aways From Sonia Gandhi’s 19 Party Opposition Meet

Representatives from 19 parties were present at the opposition meeting called by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi. In the meet, Sonia Gandhi said, “Opposition should plan systematically for 2024 elections.”

She further, said the 2024 polls are “the ultimate goal”, the Congress president said, adding: “This is a challenge, but together we can and must rise to it because there is simply no alternative to working cohesively together.”

Continuous attempts are being made by congress to unite the opposition. Earlier Senior Congress leader advocate Kapil Sibal had invited leaders like Sharad Pawar, Deriek O’Brien, Lalu Prasad Yadav for a gala dinner party, Rahul Gandhi too had invited opposition leaders for a breakfast meeting.

The meeting was attended by opposition leaders and Chief minister of 4 states Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), MK Stalin (Tamil Nadu), Uddhav Thackeray (Maharashtra), and Hemant Soren (Jharkhand). This shows that it was a high-level meeting.

Sonia Gandhi mentioned how the opposition’s unity managed to corner the central government during the monsoon session of parliament in both the houses over different issues like Pegasus snoop gate to farm laws.

Sharad Pawar made a statement that said, “Those who believe in democracy and secularism and those who want to save the democratic principles of our country, they should come together. That’s my call.”

Some leaders like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav RSVP-ed sent a statement while Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati was not invited, Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, and the Akali Dal were excluded from the guest list.

Well, the opposition is trying to mend their differences but how much it will work is something people will get to know with time. The assembly polls lined up next year will be a test for the opposition.
